What to Look for in a Scalp Oil: A Buyer's Guide to Botanical Hair Care
Not all scalp oils are created equal. Some are primarily carrier oils with a few drops of essential oil for fragrance. Others are genuinely formulated to support follicle health. Knowing the difference — by reading the actual ingredient list rather than the front-label claims — is the most useful skill in botanical hair care.
Start With the Carrier Oil Base
The carrier oil is typically 80–95% of a scalp oil formula. It determines texture, absorption rate, and base nutritional profile. Lightweight carriers like Rice Bran Oil (rich in Vitamin E and Oryzanol), Jojoba (a liquid wax ester structurally similar to sebum), and Grapeseed Oil absorb quickly and don't leave heavy residue. Heavier carriers like Castor Oil (high in ricinoleic acid) provide a protective barrier and improve scalp circulation. A well-formulated scalp oil uses a blend. PranaGlow's Root + Scalp Strength Oil uses a multi-carrier base including Rice Bran, Castor, Sweet Almond, Jojoba, Grapeseed, Mustard Seed, Moringa, and Hemp Seed — each chosen for a specific function.
The Ayurvedic Botanicals That Earn Their Place
Look for these by their INCI names on the ingredient list. Eclipta Prostrata (Bhringraj) — 'Ruler of Hair', supports scalp circulation and follicle repair. Bacopa Monnieri (Brahmi) — strengthens follicles and protects the hair cuticle. Phyllanthus Emblica (Amla) — highest natural source of Vitamin C, strengthens roots and supports natural colour. Withania Somnifera (Ashwagandha) — addresses stress-related shedding through adaptogenic action. Hibiscus Sabdariffa (Hibiscus Flower) — rich in amino acids and Vitamin C, traditionally used to stimulate dormant follicles and strengthen hair at the root. Trigonella Foenum-Graecum (Fenugreek) — protein-rich, rebuilds damaged hair structure. If these appear in the formula, they should be listed by their INCI name. If a label says simply 'Bhringraj' or 'Brahmi' without an INCI name, ask questions about concentration and sourcing.
Functional Essential Oils vs. Fragrance
Essential oils in scalp products serve two very different purposes: functional, and aromatic. Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil (rosemary), Mentha Piperita Oil (peppermint), Lavandula Angustifolia Oil (lavender), and Cymbopogon Citratus (lemongrass) are working ingredients with documented scalp benefits. Generic 'parfum' or 'fragrance' listed without disclosure is not. PranaGlow uses no synthetic fragrance. When scent is present, it comes from the botanical ingredients themselves.
What to Avoid — The Exclude List
A health-first scalp oil should contain none of the following: Dimethicone or other silicones (they coat the scalp surface, trap debris, and don't nourish). Mineral oil or petrolatum (sit on the surface rather than penetrating). Parabens in any form (methyl, propyl, butyl, ethyl — endocrine disruptors). Synthetic fragrance or parfum (common cause of scalp sensitivity). PEGs or petroleum-derived fillers. These ingredients are common in conventional hair products because they're inexpensive and create appealing textures. They don't support follicle health.
Format and Packaging Matter
A dropper bottle allows precise, targeted application to the scalp without saturating the lengths. Amber glass — the format PranaGlow uses — protects botanical ingredients from light degradation in a way plastic cannot. These aren't aesthetic choices. They're functional ones that preserve the integrity of what's inside.
